Bloomfield Cemetery is located in Bryan County

Bloomfield Cemetery is located in Bryan County, just 2 miles south of Achille, OK. The cemetery sets off the road in a hay pasture. The state of Oklahoma has Bloomfield registered as an official historic site. A monument was placed on Hwy 78 south. After vandalism, the monument remains were moved to the actual cemetery location. As you can see from the pictures, there are several headstones and rock markers in the fenced off area.

Bloomfield Academy was established in 1852 to benefit Chickasaw children. It burned in 1914 and was later relocated to Ardmore, Ok. in Carter County. In 1934, Bloomfield was renamed in honor of Charles D. Carter. Bloomfield/Carter Seminary was the first missionary boarding school for girls.

In July of 2009, the Tribal Legislature voted on resolution GR 26-057 Authorization for Acquisition of Real Property in Bryan County. The property is located one block from a main thorough fare into Colbert, and highway 69 access. The size of the acreage is 3.22 acres and comes with a 4,823sq.ft.building and a paved and lighted parking lot. Tribal Development made the recommendation to purchase the property for use as a senior site.

In May 2010 Chickasaw Times, pictures of the ribbon cutting for the new Legislative and Judicial Buildings were featured. General Resolution 24-009 was passed in November 2006, to approve the construction of a new Legislative Building. The new facility is 13,360 sq,ft. and contains 19 offices, a main meeting room, an archive/safe room and 2 large conference
rooms.

In June of 2006, GR 23-074 was introduced and passed for the construction of a new Judicial Building. The project was completed in tandem with the New Legislative Building. The new facility is 12,500sq.ft. It houses our 3 Supreme Court Justices, the District Judge and the Court Advocates.

Mr. and Mrs. Beshirs represent Achille senior center as Valentine King and Queen

Every year the Chickasaw Nation Division on Aging hosts a Valentine’s Banquet. This year the party was held at the community center in Tishomingo, Oklahoma. Each Chickasaw Senior Center has their King and Queen recognized and crowned at the banquet. Joe and Olene Beshirs were chosen to represent the Achille Senior Center. Joe and Olene have been married 62 years and set an excellent example of true Valentine Sweethearts! They have spent a lifetime ministering God’s word across America and are now enjoying retirement and the activities of the Senior Center.

While there, I had the opportunity to visit with several of our Chickasaw Elders and witness them in action on the dance floor. They made the “twist” and the “jitterbug” look easy.

Mr. Floyd Parnacher from the Purcell Center was in attendance. Floyd is a Chickasaw elder and a self taught artist! I am proud to say I have one of his paintings. To see some of his work, stop by the Purcell senior

Center and let the staff give you a guided tour. I had a chance to make a new acquaintance, Mr. Jack Kirby of the Davis/Sulphur area. It was also nice to meet up with Mr. Harris, a friend that I have not seen in a few years.

Thank you to the Division on Aging staff for all their hard work and effort. I can’t wait to see what next year’s valentine theme will be!

Later in the month, I had a chance to meet up with other Legislators for lunch at the Connerville Senior Center located in Connerville, Okla. I caught the cook, Lillian Underwood in action serving the noon meal. Her partner in the picture is Lucille Norman. Lucille is an active senior at the center also. It was nice to hear from the citizens at the site. Drop by for lunch and enjoy Lillian’s cooking. Lunch is served at 11:30 p. m. This is the best kept secret in Connerville.
